Turns out we spent more time in the past than we thought, and it's now the end of June! As we leave Le Chateau des Fausses Flammes the ground shakes ominously. It's probably nothing important. We rest then return to the pirate fleet, which is now passing the Zange on its way to Madagascar. Af-Af identifies our lightning scemitar and the Pelazgus rock for us. The scemitar belonged to Telepanu it gives extra lightning damage for each hit. We consult our astronomer-in-a-hole, they tell us the the 9 Unknown Men's mission is on *AUGUST 12*, some time in the evening, more details to follow.. We also discover that Phillip IV has started to re-form, he tells us he can guide us to Quaf, near Baku.

Lila and Harald return Saiiq to Egypt where they say many fond farewells. The Caliph is dealing with lots of civil unrest, particularly concerning the exploding Cabbah, and wishes he had a real governor for Jeruselem. H&H probably have the rock, and the Caliph would love for us to go fetch it for him next time we have a free moment.

As we are sailing along the boat suddenly runs into an enormous sheet of ice, which we are pretty sure wasn't there before. We are hailed by two well-dressed Abassids, one fat and one thin. They are representatives of the Council of 9, and seem rather put out when we have no idea who they are. They leave in a huff.

Moments later, an enormous turtle surfaces under the Ayeesha. We spread out the fleet and prepare to attack, only to discover that some jerk has gouged both of the poor turtle's eyes out. On his back someone has painted "call us when you want a deal". Our toughest guys sail out on the Ayesha to capture the turtle, which we do with some difficulty. Akim surprises a devil of some sort hiding halfway down the turtle's throat, and beats him up. Having subdued the turtle, we cast speak with monster and make friends. Really, he's just a big sweetheart and those jerks who gouged out his eyes had better watch out. Quiteria kindly re-grows the turtles eyes, we gouge one out again and she re-grows it again and everyone is happy. We raise some fog for cover and rest.

Current Party: Quiteria, Ailyll, Haizea, Deirdriu, Richard Son of Odo, Thora, Lila, Mamun, Dawa, Akim, Saiq

From Tartarus we scry on the balcony of Nicea's palace. It has been partially repaired, and we can see ropes hanging down, though they are apparently not attached to anything. We decide to teleport to the forest nearby, sending Haizea ahead to build a platform. We conjure an earth elemental and send him to scout out Nicea's chambers. He located Harald for us and we summon Kuthonomus via stone tell. We spend way too much time casting protective spells then charge in via Dimension Door.

We find statue Harald attractively posed on top of a fountain, and confirm he is indeed made of ice and slowly melting. Nicea is waiting for us with 9 or her followers, including the erstwhile Celdrix, who has been transformed into a bear. Thora is nowhere to be seen. We attempt to negotiate, and Nicea very kindly gifts us a caged cockatrice, but is loath to part with either Harald or Richard's ring. A tough fight ensues, but we are able to hold our own as Haizea brings Harald outside for Kuthonomus to fix. Noteworthy opponents include an archer who does crazy damage and a lightning-wielding berserker, as well as our old friend Upazius and a lamia.

Kuthonomus takes quite a bit longer than expected, and when he arrives he explains he was busy removing some wards "like your demoness friend told me to"... The ground starts to shake and a giant Chaos Worm emerges, driving all of Nicea's 100s of animals mad and generally messing with the integrity of matter. Nicea flees and we retreat to the forest with Upazius and some loot.

We dither for a while, and Lila and Akim teleport back to Tartarus to ask for advice. He gives them some useful info and fixes Upazius's rope for us. They return to find the rest of the party in the midst of combat with the Chaos Worm. Thora seems to have made good friends with him, and is busy fighting Nicea inside his mouth. Upazius tells us that Teshub defeated the chaos worm after being defeated himself. The chaos worm is an alcoholic, so we send Celdrix off to get some barrels of wine from Nicea's palace. Illuyanka. We finally figure out Nicea's true name - Innara. Dawa ropes the chaos worm with Upazius's rope and binds him once more. Nicea, looking extremely unhappy, returns Richard's ring and tells us to just leave.

Meanwhile, Haizea and Kuthonomus take a temperature controlled Harald inland so Kuthonomus can summon a friend to fix him. They pass hordes of animals fleeing in the opposite direction. When asked what they are fleeing they respond "the lady calls". Phew... At a river we meet Kuthonomus's friend Lucios, who returns Harald to us usual, fleshy self.

Harald is very dissappointed with his daughter's recent behavior, and as punishment we Quest her to stay in the past for one week and find us a live Amphisbena and bring it back so we can get its' skin. Richard goes along as her shaperone.

And at last, thanks to Tartarus's binding, we all go safely home, souls intact!

Melanie:

Because we are such nice people, we are off to Carnac to rescue Richard, son of Odo. We find a group of nice Centaurs and dance with them a while, then they give us directions to the Chateau des Fausses Flames. We travel there using Improved Dimension Door and find some more Satyrs. Their leader left a while ago because he was seeking Isis. We stop by Cluny to get more info, and tell them that Gerbertus has disappeared.

At the chateau itself we find mostly ruins. There is a secret door marked with a triangle which leads to a very cobwebby ladder - it appears to have been abandoned for a long time. In the middle of a corridor is a magic portal of some sort that teleports us to a less run-down continuation of the corridor. Unfortunately the shock of passing leaves Quiteria, Ailyll, Dawa and Trappo comatose. A voice from around the corridor says in Faun (which, luckily, Haizea speaks) that our friends did not withstand the crossing into the realm of Nicea. We also hear some rather nice singing. Harald takes a liking to the music and goes dancing down the corridor, revealing a Korid, who had spoken earlier. Haizea is unable to hold him back and he dances off. Lila teleports our friends' bodies back to Cluny for caretaking while Haizea sends a Message to Basra calling for help. Bernard the Chaotic Evil monk agrees to come help us rescue our friends.

We return to find the chamber empty, so we sneak in to find Harald. We end up fighting the Korid, some Lamia, and a lot of tiny centaurs. We find Richard and Harald, as well as the lady Nicea, who is loath to part with her two new companions. We find ourselves far outmatched by Nicea, even after the Korid turns coat and helps us. Only Richard and Lila make it out alive. They retreat to Cluny with more bodies to rest and recover. Meanwhile Deirdriu scries on them from Basra and comes to help. The priests at Cluny divine for us:

Ancient subjects too hard for bard
No good searching around here
Either use your noggin or strong arm in
Bring bodies near certain 4 coordinates
Not far from her with barques of yore
Those left behind not unguarded
Seek queen on throne, don't forget circling stones
Back doors approximate, dangerous
Friends wait, sit with beards 7 fathoms long

We scry on Bernard but just see a pile of ancient bones. As far as we can tell Nicea's realm is VERY far in the past - she knows of Cronos but not Zeus or Apollo.

Meanwhile, Harald frees Celdrix from his crystal sphere and they escape together. They encounter some Cyclopses and find Nonacris, passing into the kingdom of Tartarus. They watch Nicea gather a large army of some sort and sneak back to her palace to investigate.

Back in the present, we gather reinforcements and return, only to find the portal blocked by a prismatic wall. We assemble the necessary spells and get rid of it. This time we lose Lila, Richard, Saiiq and Akim to the time portal. Deirdriu, Mamun and Thora press on, chat with an ancient hero guarding a trap door leading to the Great Worm, who he tells us we should not release. Some judiciously placed fireballs get us out the front door and we flee, avoiding a chimera and eventually making it to Tartarus's realm. We chat with him and he tells us he does not have our friends' souls - we should check with Pelazgus. Pelazgus has been hoarding souls somewhere around here, which is pissing Tartarus off. They are stored somewhere in Arcadia. He also tells us that Nicea has killed some powerful people, and can resurrect them to do her bidding. A scry on Harald shows him turned into some sort of crystal and covered with what look like poisonous frogs.

(no notes)

We find our way to Arcadia, Commune with Nature and locate a network of tunnels containing evil, unnatural things, and a container full of souls. Sounds promising. Hagno the river nymph leads us through the tunnels, right into the jaws of a nasty monster. We beat him up and chat with his master the Aboleth via one of his followers. He offers us free passage through the realm of Kraken in exchange for some souls. We find our way through ourselves, and come to a great big crystal obelisk. We smash it and our friends' souls return to their bodies. Yay! Ailyll keeps a shard of the crystal to talk to later.

On our way out we find the Aboleth and fight him. We dispel a bunch of magic, including his hold on one Kuthonomus, King of the Pecs. He turns the Aboleth to stone and thanks us for rescuing him. He says he can help us fix Harald's crystalinity, just cast stone tell and call him when we need him. We leave the passages and attempt to rest.

Our rest is rudely interrupted by an 80 foot tall man with snake legs. He is Enkelados, and has come because Nicea mentioned she'd really like it if someone were to come kill us. We fight but he decides we're tougher than he anticipated and leaves. We go back to talk to Tartarus some more. He is very glad that we returned all the souls Pelazgus had stored, but can't help us much with Nicea. He does bind our souls to our bodies so we can go home without risk this time.

We rest in Tartarus' realm. Nicea sends some ravens to challenge us to a duel. She and her champions will fight an equal number of us. If we win we get Harald back and free passage out. If we lose we are her slaves forever. We tell her we'll think about it.

Yay!

On the 12th we teleport to Quiteria's convent, check on things there then head off to Rome. We hear that Pope John 15 was not actually dead, and Bruno is in exile somewhere.

Quiteria takes a small party into the papal palace. There she is met by Bishop Johannes, who tells us that Richard, son of Odo has disappeared - he was last seen a week ago at St. Maximus Abbey. He also makes some completely unsubstantiated claims about Quiteria's conduct and is generally unpleasant. We get the following divination(s?) on the subject:

Don’t want to sound like I’m a hater
But Jews are known for sitting seder;
Let’s not pass over those who use
Rituals older than the Jews
A triangle will mark the halls
Beneath which even fire’s false.

You know makes you holler “suxor”?
Where there’s a Karnak but no Luxor.
Far north from center sea’s alluvial
Soil, past related fears salluvial
A journey of a handful’s day
With evil, we will meet halfway.

Later that same evening we go to a happy dinner party at the Chrisentius's. Man does grandpa look... dead... They want us to not do the Pope's mission, and also kill the Pope.

We spend the night at Quiteria's Convent. Around midnight the skelekitty guard catches some were-rats sneaking around. Dawa tracks them, they met up with a Satyr or some similar hooved biped, then disappear. A brief scry shows us the Myra Sisters with a creepy elfish guy.

The next day we return to Rome and make a fuss until Quiteria is given an audience with the Pope himself. The Pope looks much healthier than when we last saw him, and his attendants all look somewhat cowed. He tells us that there is indeed a perfect model of the universe in Rome, though others were recently using it and may have left a guard. He implies that it would be nice if someone were to go kill that guard. We get directions and divine some more.

Talk to circle, talk to square.
Odds are that you’ll have to share.
But if on this plane you reside,
Distracting thoughts of homicide
Or suicide or both or neither
May make it hard to chart the ether.

When lifting off the tarmac,
the place you'll want to go is Carnac.

We follow the Pope's directions and find some Modrons tinkering with the model, guarded by some elves and a monster. We fight, shrink the model and run off with it.

Back at the boat we successfully pull off Chu Yan's swap. We then talk to the Modrons and agree to share the model(currently stored in a pocket dimension) with them until we are done with it.

Back in Basra, we go looking for Al-Haithem, who has just gone missing.

On the boat a message arrives from the Papal throne, inviting Quiteria to come to Rome on June 12 to meet with him. Our good friend John Chrisentius arrives right at that moment to invite us to dine with him and his father on June 12, at the very same time. He will take it much amiss if any of us don't show. He also gives us a scroll case with the following written in latin:

Demogorgon Occus
Juiblex Pezuzuzaz
2 2
Yenogas, a prize for the tiebreaker
- The council of 9

Yenogas is the demon god of Hyenas. Cave in the Bugid Emirates, east of the Abbasid Caliphate. Kut-E Kaftar, near Kermin, ruled by Bugids

We scry on Al-Haithem and see him on a cold mountaintop with a confused older Asian man. We send a message to the danger gang then teleport to the mountain. Everyone there is very surprised to see us. Ibn Unis is there, and the Asian man introduces himself as Jong Xi-Xun. We have apparently arrived at a great astronomy contest, organized by Ibn Unis to find the best astronomer for the Danger Gang. The contestants are Al-Haithem, Maslama al Madria, Vidjianndi (from India), Muhammed Al Busjani (Spain), Ariavatha (Basra), Jong Xi Chang (China), Issac Ibn Sassan (Jewish, Spain), Othric (HRE), and Yelenthiel (Jewish). They wanted Utpala and Gerbertus too but couldn't find them.

We propose as a contest that the astronomers look at a star chart from the south pole and try to deduce facts about the land under those stars. Whoever gets the most true facts wins.

Astronomers on Southern Hemisphere: Kandam, Jungleland, Australia - other 4 get. Dwarves born beneath these stars live on an island, attacked by 2 sides. Women whose heads detach and fly around. Dwarf dinosaurs who live on islands. Volcano worshippers, gigantic brain corals, sons of the eagle: Fled a sunken continent.

We reveal Ariabata as a cheat (he knows nothing about astronomy, but is very good at reading minds) and declare Al-Haithem the winner.

We take Jong Xi Chun back to Dong Jing, stopping by Basra to pick up the relevant princess. We land at Jong's jewish friend Shi's house.

Shi goes out to do bureaucracy for us, accompanied by monkey Ailyll. We see lots of horseshoe crabs everywhere. The calligrapher we seek is sequestered, working on calibrating the ancillary. A group of strange characters employed by Lao have been seen around. Lao himself, his daughter and the emperor left yesterday.

The princess says she can get us partway into the palace, but there are tons of guardian spirits everywhere. We bring her to the palace, fill out forms, answer some questions, then are locked in a room for a while. We squish a little crab who's looking at us funny, then sneak out. We find Hakim's room and go through his stuff, fight some guardians, then make it into the palace gardens. We encounter a grizzled old man who tells us he's under a geas to rob or bother us in some way. We turn a blind eye while he 'steals' some gold, and he offers us some tea in his lean-to later. We sneak around the gardens more, and finally find the golden pyramid within the maze of To Lazo. The pyramid is guarded by two 8 foot tall ladies, who we kosh. Inside we find our calligrapher, as well as a terrible tiger headed monster who can decapitate three people with a single stroke of his sword. Every round. Quiteria Suggests to Chu Yan that he flee with us, and he complies. We barely make it out of the palace alive, then teleport back to Basra.

Back at the boat we talk with Chu Yan and Al Hithem, but are interrupted when someone casts Earthquake on Basra and a bull headed man rather reminicent of the tiger man from earlier tells us that General Gao has found his prey! General Gao is very tough but the entire population of our fleet band together and fight him off. We hide Chu Yan in the portable hole and sail away to hide from further animal headed antagonists. We raise our dead and heal, but when we try to raise Dawa his head says "Cho Ya can get you out of your pickle. Scry on him." We augur and scry, and apologize profusely for missing our tea date. Cho Ya proposes a clever plan by which he duplicates Chu Yan for us, using Tillism in Eon, Lao's city, to slow down time so he can cast the spell. He will then leave us the duplicate and return the real Chu Yan to Lao so he'll stop attacking us. He also promises to tell us the results of the real Chu Yan's calculations before Lao finds out.

We point the boat towards Madagascar and rest.

Planet Impact predicted for September 9!!!

We return to beautiful Kandam, it is colder than last time we were here. Upon our arrival we see a dragon-drawn chariot coming our way, driven by a blue-armored young man. Some investigation reveals that the man is an illusion, and the dragon's lightning breath weapon is very painful. We flee and burrow into the snow to set up camp and rest. Dawa discovers a network of slimy worm tunnels under the snow.

After resting we travel around using Improved Dimention Door until we find the zone of darkness. Weird bugs keep coming to eat our light but we are able to hold them off as we march for several hours, eventually finding some tracks to follow. We encounter a number of shadow ninjas who say Uptala told them to keep people like us out. We fight, then make our way across the bridge they guarded to another giant chasm. At the bottom is a city, with no magical darkness. A dragon comes and breathes on us but then flies away, and we reach the bottom without further incident. We explore the city, finding several signs of large nasty monsters in residence. We come to a set of doors with demon heads on them and pass through. We are attacked by some gem men and a Lich with some very nice blue armor. We defeat them and collect a black metal crown from the lich, which we store in a lead box. After the combat some delayed fireballs go off and we are attacked by an arial servant, but we barely pull through and make it to a room inhabited by a very shiny ancient statue of goodness. We rest with the pretty statue and heal up.

The next room is full of fire, and a giant demon corpse attempts to enslave us. We chop off his head and continue on past some zombie Kali worshippers who once sereved Utpala and Shiva. They tell us (via speak with dead) that Utpala is obsessed with a riddle from Greece or Rome, and seeks Mandagalora, which will emenetize the eskalon. We find an altar covered with eldritch symbols similar to those we saw in the underwater city of Bali. We take a rubbng to examine later, as well as some coins and rocks.

We next enter a weird spiral corridor which appears to grow as we follow it. At the end we encounter a nasty hag who hides in a prismatic sphere and sends out all sort of fun creatures to fight us. We steal her cup and run away, only to encounter the head of an extremely large snake, from which we also flee. We end up at the edge of a frozen sea of milk, which appears to have healing properties. Beside the sea is a giant metal tree. A the base of the tree we encounter Kubai and the rest of the giant snake. This is the tree of Aborga, near the axis mumdi, and a few miles from Ool. She asks us if we follow the footsteps of Atrirani or the wingspan of Garid. Aborga is the snake, and he brings the darkness. He was recently freed by the removal of a great stone, causing the darkness to return.

We return to confront the snake, using a well-aimed Earthquake to re-bury its head. Tekalili comes to congratulate us. She offers us knowledge if we will bring her a handmaid before the sunrise (next one is Sept 21). She also wants the dog coat of Myderrae from Ool. She can control anything that is dressed in white. We go back to Kubai at the sea of milk. She warns us not to trust Tekalili. She knows Evelake by the name Mordains. We rest at the sea of milk then travel away from the mountians to teleport back to Basra.

We follow The Path to an overgrown ruin with lots of sink holes. Two elephant lions attack us, as does some of the surrounding flora. We devise a complicated lever system to open the door, avoiding the cloud of poison gas that comes out. There is a plaque with one illegible inscription and one in Tamil, which Mamun reads as "Haravarma of the house Kdamba late of the house Mayouan". We enter into a room full of statues representing Hindu gods. 12 of them come to life and attack us. They are crazy tough. One shoots a beam at Ailyll, and she suddenly wakes up in the room where she was born!

Ailyll gathers some allies among the local druids and hurries back to India via plant. On our way in we meet Willa, who also joins our party. We wend our way through many more trapped passages and eventually find a snakey door which leads to a very large sarcaphagus. Magic runes say "Disturb not the tomb of the faceless one, his reach exceeds his grasp". There is an ominous hissing sound from inside the sarcophagus. We explore some more, set off some traps, find a lot of fire-proof mummy wrappings (some of which we keep) and find another huge sarcophagus. This one contains a staircase. We are attacked by several skeleton and mummy snakes, and flee down the stairs. At the bottom there is a narrow, muddy corridor, leading to a slightly submerged lever. We are barely able to turn the lever as our party members are killed off one by one. This lever opens yet another shaft, containing another sarcophagus. Inside is a perfectly preserved body wearing a helmet. Pickety Pockety picks the helmet, revealing a leather mask with tentacles where the mouth should be. We hear the word 'freedom' in our heads as the man rises, and we flee back to Raja Raja Chola's palace with the helmet.

AKA Temple of Gautama

Harald drops us off via Dimension Door and we present Raja Raja Chola's seal and sister to the monks. They are a bit reluctant to let us in so late at night but eventually they summon their leader, who welcomes us in. After quite a bit of arguing they agree to let us explore the Naga City, accompanied by Brother Sona, who has been there before. He leads us to a room with a Naga Oroborous seal and lots of snake tunnels. We are attacked by many many snakes, one of which turns out to be Sona. One of the rooms to the north is manufacturing cobras out of spare parts, and the one in the south has a magical light which generates shadow snakes. We disable the snake factories and interrogate Soma. Rani, who was bitten by a shadow snake, has started to turn rather shadowy herself, so we send her back to the monastery for healing. Further in we fight a giant stone snake, who says "He who has removed the conceit I am". Finally we find a trap-door, behind which is a fancy lever.

We pull the lever, revealing a very old pillow with three cup-shaped indentations. We keep going and find another, fancier lever guarded by some sort of plant monster. Beyond this lever we find another pillow holding 3 cups, which say 'Kili' when sounded.

Before even entering Decca we are set upon but some cocatrix. Haizea and Ruber are turned to stone but we manage to turn Ruber back.

A great bronze door with a frog face requests that we quench his thirst, we give him some of Ruber's blood and he lets us in. We enter a room full of statues that look a great deal like petrified adventurers looking up. We don't look up. One 4-armed statue asks us to find her what is lost and free her, we promise to do so and continue on. In the next room we fight some brown mould and find the remains of the last party to come through. Next we come to a torture chamber and a bunch of prison cells, none of which contain the lever we seek. After much more exploring, including digging our way through a giant pit of bones, we finally come to a room with a large altar guarded by two stone and iron statues. On a tripod there is a strange box, and inside the box there is a lever. We search for treasure while wait for word from the other parties.

We turn the lever and one round later it opens. It contains a swirly crystal ball, presumably the Eye of the Naga. We chat with the Nagapattinam party and scry on Bodawatti, then continue to explore. We find another, very similar looking lever, guarded by a Tiger Headed rakshassa who mistakes Harald for Attigat. We pull this lever, allowing the other parties to pull theirs as well. We find a familiar-looking orb floating in a jade bowl full of wine. It must be close to the word or the helm (?).

We return to the tournament grounds to find out most of Lao's people have cleared out. The shops are gone and the magical protection has been lifted. We divide the prizes and Appolonious declares the tournament officially over.

We hang out and chat with folk for a while. Appolonious tells us about a harmonious stone that may be able to cure Lila and Dawa of their horrible madness. It was in the land of the Kimek Turks far to the North East. He also tells us that in Ling Sang they might know about Okba the robot-maker. Bandit upstart Gezzer recently married into the royal family, causing some trouble in the area. Orm fills us in on his findings about Tipidio-Tahuna.

After our friends leave we pack all our stuff, friends, thieves, druidlings and hangers-on into the tower and attempt to rest. It is not to be so, as some crazy shadowy creatures and a disembodied hand come to attack us in the night. Looks like it's those walking/crawling/squirming horrors we may or may not have let loose from the mound of shards. It is a super tough fight but we manage to take them out. We try once more to rest but are interrupted by 'The Theban', who came to investigate the death of the two great shadows. He dillies and dallies, leaves, comes back, says he doesn't like Harald and tries to extort us for some Teeth so Harald chops off his head with a single blow. Take that. We finally manage to rest, raise our dead and fail to remove the terrible curses our night's adventures have left us with.

Right after a hard-fought Final Round Harald, Lila, Akim, Haizea, Quiteria, and Dawa take off for Semiramigard. We Teleport to the lower city based on some divination evidence (and a lucky 00 on the teleport roll), then walk across an invisible bridge into the might mesa supporting the upper city. We enter a spacious chamber, filled with fungus, and get attacked by spore-sprouting, fungus-possessed trolls. We take them down, then continue our exploring. We encounter a Drowad, which is a fungus dryad who worships Lloth. She and Quiteria talk for a bit in Undercommon, and she reveals that the Rats of Nimrod and the local Myconoid men used to maitain a balance of power in this dungeon. Once the Rats of Nimrod left for Spain the mushrooms took over, then a Beholder showed up and they started worshipping him as a god. Great.

We continue through the dungeon, fighting more trolls and mushroom guys. We find a dragon skeleton in a room that could not admit entry of a dragon, which is weird, and some giant bacteria encased in cocoons. There is a room with manacles and mysterious bloodstains, and lots and lots of fungus, including a beautiful Drowad cultivated hanging fungal gardens. Very classy. After much wandering and tracking we find a secret trapdoor in the ceiling, and head on up into another dungeon level. There we find tons of Myconoid men in a large chamber. Dawa seems to be the only one who can hear them in his brain, which is too bad. We Fireball them and run out of the room once they start telling him to wait for the Eye. Of course, with our luck we run right into the throne chamber of the Mushroom King, a very deep chasm on one side! Behold his armor, coated with Yellow Mold that assaults any who strike him! Behold his Brown Mold covered shield, which sucks the very heat from your bones! Behold the cloud of spores surrounding him, spores so sharp and invisible that they cut the crap out anyone in melee range! Behold the seven saves you must make by breathing anywhere nearby! Yeah, it sucks fighting this guy, and then the beholder shows up, rising from the chasm. Everyone is making 6 or 8 saves per round, Harald employs the awesome strategy of leaping onto the beholder's head and stabbing it. Characters fall like flies, Akim gets turned to stone, Harald slips off the beholder's head, then gets turned to stone, and Lila saves the day. How, you ask? Well, the party made their saves vs. disintegration, but turnabout is fair play, and the beholder failed his save vs same. Suck it, Eye Tyrant!!

Lila Teleports away with stone Harald, since he has the magic key to open the door and all. The rest of the party wishes they had more spells, more hp, and fewer dwarf statues.

Back at the tournament grounds Lila gets Trappo to un-stone Harald using his stone chip from the Galeb-dur, then gathers some reinforcements for the rescue mission. He, Ellylw and our recently reunited friend Nali teleport back to rejoin the party. We heal up as best we can, summon some new giant bugs to carry stone Akim, and set off. We go up some very long stairs which have 'Nimrod' spelled out in Hebrew over the landings. We fight some sort of Mummy Umber Hulk and some un-turnable vampires. The vampires go hide in a room full of colourful lights. The green one appears to be some sort of anti-magic field, who knows what the others do. After we burn off the vampires' mushroomy overlords (how does that even work?) they willingly accept Quiteria as their mistress and beg her to let them eat one of her party members. She promises to bring them back some other humans later if they'll tell us the way to the treasure chamber. They direct us to the tomb of Arra the beautiful. On the bier is written 'Arra, he failed a resurrection roll'.

In the next room we find Gregor, who has somehow made it here unscathed. We encourage him to try to convert Lila to christianity while unseen opens the door behind his back. Of course we have to go in to make sure nothing was stolen. Inside we find a huge wall of fire with a spinning wheel inside it, and an enormous man with snakes coming out of his shoulders chained to the wall. Behind the wall of fire there are mountains of awesome treasure in some sort of stasis field such that no amount of force can move them. Also, a very large black ball.

The man introduces himself as Zehak, and amuses us with his charming conversation for quite some time. He tells us that the treasure is frozen in time, but would be unfrozen if the wheel stopped. He also offers to cast unlimited limited wishes for us if we would just stop the terrible burning of the fire he is stuck in, just for a moment. We examine the treasure, chat with Zehak, and try to decide what to do next.

After further dallying our good friend Evelake shows up, accompanied by Lady Thora. Evelake says he is just here for some 'fat loot', and maybe to annihilate himself forever, and we should totally team up and he won't do anything tricksy, promise. As we think about it he has a little secret chat with Harald about Dr Lao. He believes Lao's goal is to save the world, then rule it with an iron fist. We are not convinced that the world ending is better than Dr Lao being in charge, but promise to think about it. There is further conversation in languages only small subsets of the party understand, but Gregory is getting more and more anxious at the repeated suggestion that we stop the wheel to grab the treasure.

In the end we decide to jump Evelake before he jumps us. A tense fight ensues - recently beat up Evelake is still really tough! Just when we have finally knocked him down his Kirin intercedes, stopping time to whisk him away. Quiteria resists the time stop however, and is able to bargain for Celdrix's crystal from Evelake's sword before they go. That being all settled, and Lady Thora now apparently sort of on our side, Harald tries to leap through the wheel and fails, severing his arm. We try to use this as a pretext for stopping the wheel but Gregor doesn't buy it. Trappo coshes him magnificently and we drag him and stone Akim outside. Quiteria and Dawa hold the wheel still while the others dash for treasure and try to avoid the horrible black ball. We grab some neat stuff while raven Ellylw plays tag with the black ball, which ends up perilously close to the wheel. Lila tries out the organ, driving her, Dawa and possibly Zehak mad, we start up the wheel again and get out of there as fast as we can.

Outside we catch our breath and retrieve our key as the door slides shut and the treasure chamber disappears for another year. We tear off Gregor's lichy arm for good measure, hide the treasure as well as we can, and settle down to rest.

We rest, heal up, neutralise everyone's poison and re-attach Harald's arm. Gregor grumbles about how some people get all the arm-reattachment but doesn't attack us or anything. Turns out Lila and Dawa's madness cannot be cured by any normal means, which leaves us without a teleport, so we settle down to wait for our Rod of Transport to re-charge. While we wait we examine the loot. Haizea tries on the crown, orb and sceptre, which suit her very well and seem somewhat loath to leave her possession. Now she's a princess! The scroll has some useful spells, particularly stone to flesh.

After a while an ugly-looking guy who comes off as non-human peeks around the corner but scampers off. We decide to move in case he went for reinforcements. Just outside Ara's tomb we meet a lovely lady riding a giant toad monster. She is not very friendly but seems to want our stuff, we fight and learn that our shiny new sword likes to try to take over our opponents' brains, and is totally not cursed in some way we will discover later. The lady flees and we continue on our way. At this point we discover that our map got lost in the fighting somewhere along the way, but our nice vampire friends point us in the right direction and we find our way back to the top of the Nimrod stairs. After getting 'woe' on going North (the way we came from) we head to the unexplored South and find an empty shaft with a giant propeller at the bottom. We jam what looks like the 'on' switch and settle down to wait some more. We have just settled down when a bunch of (Jerks from the Neutral plan) appear from out of no where looking really mad. We try to talk it out but they dispel our tongues and attack. Thora says they think we are Slaad in disguise. After we beat down a few of their number and Harald grabs one of their silver swords they change their minds about parley - too bad we don't have some sort of spell that would allow us to communicate directly. We eventually convince them that we are not Slaad and agree to give them back their shiny sword if they will help guard us while we rest.

The vampires go hide in a room full of colorful lights.

Ellylw tries on the crown, orb and scepter, which suit her very well and seem somewhat loathe to leave her possession.

Right after a hard-fought Final Round Harald, Lila, Akim, Heizeiah, Quiteria, and Dawa take off for Semiramigard.

A fancy dinner party is held for all remaining tournament contestants. Each attendee is given a seal, which they are asked to guard and not open. Finding strong guardians for these seals was apparently the (an?) ulterior motive behind the tournament. Them all being opened is bad news, no further details are given.

Shortly afterwards we meet up with our friend Cresentius. He gives us the following three bits of info:

1) John Cresentius is a very helpful guy these days when it comes to side quests related to Jan Seyoum's growing badness. He tells us that he and Jan Teleported to Antarctica. Jan fought some folks off screen, then returned with a grin on his face. We go to check it out, and find the following from a combination of speaking to the DDR's dead gnome cleric and stone telling on some rocks near him:
While adventuring in Antarctica, the DDR, fearing the end of the world, wanted to leave to a safer place. The went to a magic amphitheater in Antartica taht held a pool in the bottom. The pool was dangerous in some way (rocks say "people put stuff in, but nothing ever comes back out"). Their cleric (The Master of Flame, a Zoroastrian gnome), being old and leukemiotic, chose death instead, and sat down and caught ablaze. The DDR dumps the Ark in the pool and then disappears. All well and good. Some time after, but not too long after, three guys show up: One pale guy and two dark-skinned guys. One of the dark-skinned guys has on shiny black armor, and the other one is wearing a red shirt. They throw a sword in the pool. While they are there Jan Seyoum shows up. He kills one of the dark-skinned guys (the one with the red shirt), but then he talks with the other two and they seem to come to an understanding. Jan throws a stone in the pool, then leaves happy. The two guys use a sword to freeze the pool solid, then roll it out of the amphitheater. We show up a little later and fight a bunch of monsters, talk to The Master of Flame, take some rocks, and leave.

2) Cresentius has two "awesome sweet mounts". One is a flying skeleton, the other is a winged black cat. Evelake borrowed the cat for a week.

3) In Rome the pope is raising a crusade against some sort of haunted nunnery. I wonder where that could be...

We attempt to bargain for info on the Corpse Tearer but our clumsy attempts at diplomacy enrage Froger, who attacks us. Kormenac finds us quite charming and the kobolds hold back while the troll and soon the snow lady attack us. 1) Name the steed who draws the sun into the sky - Skinfaxi
Who/What is the floaty skull? At sights of great slaughter the negative energy forms around the skull of one of the slain, creating Sacerole. This creature has tentacles that choke, a terrible scream, and animates corpses which it sends to the Corpse Tearer for dinner.

2) What river divides the land of the gods from that of the giants? Ifing but we get it wrong, no question for us

3) Name of the field where the Gods fight the Yotens at the End of Days - Vgrith but we get it wrong, no question for us

4) Out of whose body was formed the earth and sky? Emir
Where does the Corpse Tearer hide its treasure? It feeds jewels and metals to its friend. Other stuff is shuffled in a corner behind the sleeping chamber, past the cold waters.

5) When the blood of Emir drowned the giants, who survived? Burglemir
How do we get inside the lair? There is a route through pestilent swamps with giant white fluffy worms, through cold waters, past many trolls, gem-eating friend

As we grow nostalgic for the feelings of horrible death and terror associated with the river Styx, we decide to go back for one last shot. Richard son of Odo promised to go back and rescue the rock people we met before, and we agree to help him out. His plan is to go on a suicide mission to another entrance to Hades while we break the rock people free via the Styx entrance.

It is one long trudge down to Hades, only Quiteria seems to be having a good time. We fight a whole lot of demons and use the mind blank tooth to free the rock folk from their bondage. They help us finish off the demons, who cast reverse gravity but fail to kill any of us. The rock people were being forced to build a pipe around the river Styx, for what nefarious purpose we do not know. Harald takes the rest of the party home while Quiteria and Lila Plane Shift the rock people out. The rock people are headed to Caledonia, but promise to repay the favor if they ever get the chance. So we head off to Gungard, leaving a charming undead chimera to guard our stuff. We meet Saredon, last of the Narts. He's a real jerk and turns us into monkeys for no reason. He tells us to stay away from the Cave of Prometheus and not trust the white snake. We ditch him and go looking for some Cyclopes. We meet a white snake, guardian of the star of the winds, who asks us to please not plunder the temple of Maya Erdu. We find the Cyclopes labyrinth and are about to explore when Saredon comes back to bother us. Harald tells him how the (Sword that kills what you love most) was broken and he hurries off looking rather distressed. We beat up all the Cyclopes and steal their gold and their blood.

We go back again in a last shot at rescuing our friends and getting some Styx water. The river has frozen over but we manage to find some further upstream. We fight piles of demon and Find the Path to a place directly under where our friends disappeared. On our way we meet Kentimentiu and Maskini, who claim to have recently emerged from spheres in which they were imprisoned about 10 000 years ago. They came looking for the Guardian of Ra, a mechanical scorpion and generally seem pretty dodgy.

We fight some brass minotaurs and get to the end of our path. We use various means to dig in all directions and fetch spheres. Quiteria comically Magic Resists her way in to a sphere but fails her roll to get out, leaving her trapped as well. Pouring Styx water on them opens them and we free our friends, the river lady's bear man and an adorable miniature chimera. We squash it but Quiteria puts it in her pocket to animate later.
