Chance once studied in a distant monastery where they practice a special form of martial arts; he was kicked out, readmitted on appeal, and then kicked out for real and permanently, all in the course of nine months. Fortunately for Chance, he stumbled across a hermit, a disgruntled ex-monk, who taught Chance a particularly esoteric form of martial arts. He also taught Chance some thieving skills (for they subsisted on what they could filch, either from the jerk monastery or town) as well as some mental and physical powers.

Even since Chance â€œgraduatedâ€ (or whatever), heâ€™s been wandering around getting into trouble and then getting out of his with his fists, getting drunk and then getting into more trouble and then getting out of it with his fists. Repeat.
