    About to leave the complex, staying the night with some mushroom people, and then I only 
    have a few minor things to check out before I go.  Expedition has gone well. Lost Uren 
    somewhere in these ruins, but we neednâ€™t worry about his being captured and questioned by 
    our enemies he doesn't know about my little surprise.  Iâ€™ll tell you about it later.
    
    Taking the old man's book was child's play. The knowledge contained herein is incredible.  
    I'm half inclined to burn it [lest it fall into the wrong hands]*.
    
    These ruins themselves are [â€¦].  It sounds mad, and I'm sure I made a mistake somewhere, 
    but I have set its construction at 250 million years ago.  Even if this figure is off by a 
    factor of a thousand, the condition of the place is remarkable; powerful magics as well as 
    engineering prevent it from falling apart or developing speleal features.  It seems like 
    the place has spent large portions of its history under ice, which may have contributed to 
    its state of preservation.
    
    I'm beating around the bush here because what I discovered in the northlands is, in many 
    ways, too terrible to tell, certainly by letter.  Suffice it to say that [â€¦]

    [â€¦] few miles away I found a group of savages who worshipped octopus-like gods; for 
    reasons I won't go into now, this seems to indicate that these people have been in some 
    sort of contact with the ancient race. Religious ecstasy seems to be the connecting 
    factor, but we don't know [â€¦] I eliminated all representatives of this people.  I will 
    have to use saying devices to determine if there exist any other peoples in the wilds of 
    Europe, or the jungles of Africa, or the terrors of Asia, who exist in contact with the 
    ancient ones.  Needless to say any who would serve their ends must be eliminated.
    
    I need you to start preparing. The expeditions to the east we discussed are now a matter 
    of grave importance; I will need you to visit both Egypt and India to gather the wisdom  
    and components we need.  I will explain more later.
    
    I've picked up a great deal about long-term preservation in these ruins, so I'm going to 
    take the time to preserve Drylesna in Psoikanthe, in the heart of the mountain where she 
    will be in a position to restart the human race should we fail. If only Aramin could have 
    [been persuaded to take...]* After that I may use the old man's book to seek help from the pits of Tartarus.  The 
    cause of humanity is not yet lost I should be back in Macedon in a few [â€¦]
