His public appearance:

Cyril Gerszon is an awkward boy in his mid teens. He's got a wiry strength, but strikes the eye as rather gaunt and even sickly. Has sharp, angular, awkward features; when not in armor, he dresses somewhere between "ragged villager" and "pirate", complete with bandana (or three) always tied around his head.

Left his village near Marcianopolis to flee the violence spun out by Bardas Phocas. Worked on ships around the Euxine before being left in Chrysopolis by his crew for theft.

Once you get to know him, a few more things are apparent:

Cyril cleaned up a bit of his history and his nature. Cyril is, to give him the nicest possible title, a thiefling. He has horns that grow a few millimeters a day, which he usually files in the morning and keeps covered. He smells of brimstone unless he covers it with perfume, which usually leaves him florid in some sense. And when cornered or angered, he's prone to sulking (and covering his vicinity in a gloom) or raging (creating and throwing fire) or both.

All of this is related to a curse or prophecy that he won't talk about. He has dedicated his life to proving the prophecy wrong by becoming a pillar of virtue, raising up the downtrodden, and saving the helpless. He has found that between friendliness and intimidation in turns, he can be charismatic. He's decently intelligent, but not wise-- he's a bit of a bumpkin, naive, and his warring natures make him likely to make some fairly stupid mistakes.

And it's really not clear whether the prophecy *is* right. He tries, but he's naive to a fault and has quite a temper on him...
