Martialis rejoins the Danger Gang and everyone is very amped up to see him. First up, they grab the skull from the Mithraic temple. Time for the four questions.
1. What happened to the temple? "A man with glittering eyes said he had knowledge. Then he emitted flames and shot around his Finger of Death."
Well, looks this old Lord Evelake character everyone has been talking about was in town.
2. Between your visit with the bull dancer and your death, did you learn anything new? "The priests of Mithras spend their time forgetting, not learning."
That question was a waste, I guess.
3. Where did the Mithraic priests go? "Constantinople"
Maybe some of the home team should try to track them down?
4. Where is the Crown of Dido? "I don't know."
Another one wasted, still, two out of four aint bad.
With that, Padre Pantalone says he's going to break out of here. Return to his quiet life of whatever he did before the Danger Gang showed up. He says he'll hang on to the Mirror Of Evil Clones, and though Ezio doesn't want to let it go, nobody is really in the mood to lug around a full length mirror all the time.
So they're off to the church of St. George. The church appears to be long abandoned. The front door seems boarded up, but when someone decides to actually try pushing on the door, it opens right up.
Once inside, they start scrounging around. It is then that a mysterious note floats out of the darkness reading, "Leave This Place". Marty, with his Detect Magic mojo working, notices that the note is being held by an invisible cat's paw. It is then that they hear an inhuman voice say, "You idiot! You idiot!"
Then one of the stain glass windows depicting St. George comes to life as some sort of Golem.
The fighting begins. Karl takes a moment to peak around the corner, where he spies a clutter of Cat People. The Danger Gang is caught in a classic pincer! Can catches a few of them in a web, but one takes on a ghostly form and fades out.
There's fighting and the Golem shoots out a bunch of rays of damaging light. The Golem gets taken down and most of the cat people get dealt with, despite spells putting stops on a lot of what they've been doing. They tie up and bind the wounds of the injured Cat People. They try to interview them, but it seems none of them speak human languages, despite the fact that one of them clearly spoke Italian.
Then the reinforcements show up. One cat person emerges from the clutter as Can puts a knife to a fallen soldier's throat. "We just want to talk. Barring that, we want to leave."
"Your friends may leave, but I think you...you will stay." It is then that a huge scary ghost nightmare thing appears behind this lead Cat Person. Can tells everyone that they should run and starts booking himself. But it doesn't pan out. He is struck, apparently dead, by the Phantasmal Killer. The other members of the gang pick him up and drag him out of there.
Once in a nearby alleyway, Marty tries to convince them to martial their forces for a counter strike. Everyone grumbles and nobody seems quite gung-ho about it. Then the Cat People ambush them for good measure. Ezio lets out a Stinking Cloud that takes care of a handful of them, but leaves the spell caster still standing. Our heroes then start vomiting and gagging themselves. Things are looking pretty shitty.
Then an arrow flies down from on high. They look, up on a roof top. It's Ramble!
Still, the boys get their asses kicked. It is then that some figures emerge from the mist. There's a nod of recognition between the Cat People top dog and the gentlemen. The Cat People return to the church with a few laughing meows. The men tell the boys that they're under arrested. Karl produces the writ from Gebertus, and so the guards let him go. They break out of there to lick their wounds.
They run out of there and back to the Vatican. It is then that Can emerges from his death-like stupor. It seems the Scarab of Protection saved his life! However, this proved all together too much for the old fellow, and so he decides he's going to hang up his spurs. They tell Padre Pantalone they're going to go rest in the Mithraic temple, but instead they go check in at an inn for the evening.
