KL was born in an experimental city ruled by the philosopher king Neanther, who assigned names according to station and home block: this explains his unusual name. The epithet “le gross” he got as he collected the teeth of Dahlver Nar (an ancient priest of the Moon from back in the day when the moon and the earth were much closer than they are now), with each tooth making him eat more, and thereupon get fatter like the waxing moon.

KL was a more experienced adventurer than the rest of the party when he joined, and he has in a way kept his elder statesman role, even though everyone’s just about caught up to him in level.

KL’s greatest weapon is of course his teeth, an artifact of nearly unprecedented power. Since all metal passes thought his flesh without hurting it, and all non-magical non-metal weapons cannot hurt him anyway, he’s rarely in any danger in a fight. He uses the great power of the teeth sparingly, and doesn’t go around death magicking opponents he could simply beat up with his club. He prefers slugging it out, and, if his own native talent doesn’t cut it, he’ll simply turn into a bear

Note that with the exception of his two magic rings (which fit on his paws) none of KL’s possessions turn into a bear with him. When he changes, he simply shrugs off his pack and tears through the light clothing he wears; after which he just passes through the chain. His teeth remain, and can be used for biting as though they were normal teeth.

He still keeps the first two magic items he ever owned, his “moon’s hand” club and his glowing chain mail, even though his party members would probably prefer him to ditch the chain mail, which glows and can be rather annoying. But KL is a sentimentalist, and anyway bright shining chain mail looks really cool from a distance.

KL gets along well with everyone in the party, although he thinks Chance is too flighty and unpredictable. He knows that Fearless would probably let the party down in a pinch, if it actually came to that, but they’ve been adventuring together for years, and it never has, so maybe he’s misjudged her. KL is more or less Fearless Earless’s vizier and advisor, and it’s his job to prevent her dragging the party down any evil or rotten paths. She may have the brains, but he has the wisdom.

Dark Deedman KL trusts a little more, maybe because his goddess (Mother Night) is so closely related to KL’s own, and partially because he and KL have a similar sense of humor. He gets along with Hemlock better than anyone else does except maybe Emil, although Hemlock, it must be conceded, is not easy to get along with. Emil seems a good sort, but KL has never been particularly close to him; Emil was a good friend of In Setta’s, and has been troubled ever since she left; perhaps KL has done him a disservice in not helping him more. Oakenliver is a little too uptight for KL’s taste, frankly, and dwarves never did honor the moon overmuch. Sliver, who is, after all, very young, KL has taken under his wing, and even though she has not been with the party long she is closer to KL than anyone is.

KL is the most powerful member of the party and he knows it. Heck, everyone knows it. Possessing an artifact of such power would have corrupted a lesser man, but KL remains the same as he ever was; just grateful that he can use his powers to smite evil and the enemies of the moon. Nothing is cooler than smiting evil with your teeth, especially if the teeth are handed down from millennia before.
