Deirdriu was born in a small village in Galatia. Her parents died of a plague when she was a young child and she was only able to beg a meager living by training animals to perform tricks and occasionally steal. During the warmer months she spent most of her time out in the woods alone. Her only human friend was an old Christian priest who taught her Latin and let her sleep in the church on colder nights, but after she accidentally knocked over a torch and set fire to the church she was no longer allowed to visit him. A wandering Druid noticed her wisdom and affinity with animals and nature. He directed her to the Galatian Druidic Circle, promising her a better life and a chance at learning the hidden secrets of nature. She traveled to the Circle and was accepted as an initiate, but soon became an outcast because of her terrible clumsiness. She was banned from participating in important ceremonies and celebrations, and began to fear that she would never be able to become a true Druid.
She found new hope however when a recently initiated Druid passed through Galatia to meet with the Druidic leadership. Ailyll was clearly more stupid even than Deirdriu was clumsy, and yet she had defeated the crafty Rudderch in a duel and entered the ranks of Druids. Deirdriu was even more drawn to Ailyll when she saw how poorly the Galatian Druids treated her, refusing to help her in an hour of need. Surely, Ailyll would understand, and would give Deirdriu the guidance she needed to become a true Druid. Alas, Ailyll left Galatia before Deirdriu had a chance to meet her, disappearing as suddenly as she had appeared. Deirdriu redoubled her efforts and studies, swearing to become the best initiate in Galatia, and worthy to serve Ailyll when she became an Archdruid.
