Rani grew up in Eastern Persia as the daughter of an Ismali imam. She spent many a bored hour helping her mother work while her father droned on with wandering holy men and locals with questions of faith. When Rani was 15 her father recieved a vision and packed up his family to spread the word. They traveled throughout India, ending up in the Chola empire. They stayed there a year or so, and then her father had another vision, telling him to go back. He decided to take passage on a ship, but it was waylaid by lady pirates. As the family was poor, Rani offered herself as a crewwoman in return for her family's freedom. The pirate Captain, [[Priscilla]], accepted. Rani soon learned that these pirates weren't half bad, and she found that she loved the sea. In time she was accepted as one of the [[Widows]], and she became "close friends" with [[Kudrun]]. A giant clam caught her  right leg when she was diving for pearls in the Red Sea, and she was forced to cut through her calf with a dagger to avoid drowning. While her pegleg normally makes a distinct "click, clack" sound when she is on deck, she is able to walk quite silently when she wants to. Her knickname is Hyena, for her tendency to laugh too much at her own practical jokes.
