Gjergj fancies himself a swashbuckler; and not just any swashbuckler, but among the greatest in the world. He will gladly regale any passer-by with tales of his derring-do that are, quite literally, incredible. This has not kept the odd gullible ruffian from falling for his act, joining up with his gang for one of his hare-brained “jobs,” only to discover that when things suddenly go distinctly pear-shaped, their fearless leader disappeared the previous round. For Gjergj, it’s the pre-planning boasting he loves best: “they’ll never know what hit ‘em!” “we’ll have ‘em right where we want ‘em!” and “by the time they realize anything we’ll be halfway to Constantinople!” Everything after that point is actual work, an activity he has much less interest in. Instead, he horribly oversells his own abilities, promises inexperienced thieves their day in the sun, and vanishes before they all end up in the stocks.

One such misadventure found him at the head of a mutiny on a merchant vessel that had unwisely chosen Gjergj and his newly-recruited gang as crew. While they succeeded in overthrowing the captain and his men, none among the mutineers possessed any sailing know-how whatsoever, and the ship soon sank. Gjergj, the sole survivor, swam to shore and found himself in the Greek lands. Hearing that the great Albanian pirate Halcyon and his lieutenant were now running a city, he traveled to Chrysopolis with the intent of recruiting them into his gang. Eorl, looking to fill out his rolls as best he could, strung the prevaricator along, promising to join up with Gjergj if the youngster could demonstrate his mastery of the thieving arts by stealing Halcyon’s monogrammed lockpicks. Of course Gjergj demurred, claiming he “wasn’t feeling well,” after eating some bad dates, and that his fingers “were still puffy” from the beating he had recently given three giants, but would do so when Eorl was least expecting it.

Of all the oddball characters who showed up, Eorl had the greatest trouble incorporating Gjergj into the Thief Takers, not the least reason of which is how Gjergj periodically claims that he’s actually in charge and is only pretending to follow Eorl’s orders to make him feel better for being so uncharismatic.
