Noah: where does all this information come from? Incidentally, if indeed a gryphon carried Alexander the Great into the sky it was not merely for him to explore it, but also so he could claim dominion over it. He descended into the ocean in a bathysphere for the same reason.
tcm: it comes from the Greek Alexander Romance. and you're right, he was trying to claim dominion over it.
