Ghazalah was born the only daughter of a wealthy merchant in Palermo. Her mother died in childbirth, and her father swore to never marry again, but instead kept a rotating harem of slave girls purchased during his travels. As Ghazalah grew up the only constant in her life was her father's presence, and this was not really a positive thing. He vacillated between neglecting her when buisness was busy or poor, and showering her with fancy gifts when he made some windfall. Ghazalah knew he inteneded to marry her off, likely as part of some deal or other, and she was none too happy about this idea. Luckily for her she was rather homely, and no one who had seen her was willing to offer much discount in exchange for such a wife. Instead she puttered along into young adulthood, and her father began using her as unpaid labor in his buisness. She learned a good bit from this, and was fairly happy.

As she grew older her father treated her more and more like an employee and less like a daughter. She was no longer given jewelry or expensive clothes, and didn't even get the wages the other workers were paid. She didn't like this one bit, and took to taking small amounts from her father's moneybox when he wasn't around. After a hundred gold pieces of this her father started keeping his chests locked at all times. Ghazalah was not to be stopped, and she studied locks and how to open them until she could once again get into the box. The lock was replaced with a more difficult one, and eventually traps were added. Her father fired workers he suspected, but the thefts kept on. He never thought that his own flesh and blood could be overcoming such obstacles to rob him.

At age 17 Ghazalah failed a roll and got a nasty stab from a poison needle on a trading voyage to Sicily. Her father found her unconcious at the foot of his chest, picks in hand. He was so overcome with rage that he dumped her overboard and left her to drown. Luckily she was awoken by the shock, and she made several heart-explosion rolls while swimming to shore. She didn't know what to do, or where to go. WHile she contemplated her fate she overheard some dockhands speaking in hushed tones about how the the great pirate Mamun's master of traps had just bought a ship. She presented herself to Trapo, and asked if he could take her on with his crew, and teach her the ways of traps. In exchange she could help him run a front company to fence his pirated wares. He accepted her, and she vowed to study his lessons hard and never be caught by a trap again.
