Ortolfus was rat-catcher of Hamelin when Norwit pulled his famous stunt, and, adding insult to injury, he lost to slavery not merely his only son but also his young apprentice. He spent a year scouring the Holy Roman Empire for any trace of them, and, coming up empty handed, vowed to exact terrible revenge on Norwit. Taking up his traps and skewers, Ortolfus traveled across Europe, sniffing out the wererat’s scent. He moved from one town to the next, depleting the rodent population as he went. His reputation became such that most rats actually fled in advance of his arrival; leaving only those who spoiled for a fight behind for him to deal with.

A decade or more passed before Norwit achieved his status as one of the Five Greatest Rogues of the Eastern Mediterranean, and Ortolfus was clued in to his role as advisor to a rebel Byzantine general. He had not yet arrived in the Greek lands when Chrysopolis withstood Michael Bourtzes’ siege, and by the time he caught wind of Eorl’s feud and arrived in Constantinople, the Danger Gang’s pact was already in effect.

Ortolfus spent time casing Calpe, and though he did not catch sight of Norwit himself, it was clear that his nemesis had come a long way from duping simple villagers and was now something of a self-styled crimeboss of an influential lycanthropic mafia. He would be practically untouchable. It was then he decided to throw in his lot with Eorl, even if he had to bide his time. After all, he had already waited twelve years... if necessary, he could wait twelve more...
