Akim was born to a pair of Dwarven slaves in Baghdad. His parents were jesters in the household of a high-ranking Buwahyid general. They had been enslaved in Madagascar by Arab traders, and they missed their homeland. Still, life as a slave of a well-placed master had its merits, and they were not mistreated more than usual. They were content.
Akim, on the other hand, grew up despizing his parents, his master, and his fellow slaves. He was a quarrelsome youth, and he picked fights with everyone he could. Due to his great strength and capacity for damage he won much more often than not, even against groups or larger opponents. This brought him to the eye of his master, who saw in Akim a potential for entertainment and perhaps profit. He had Akim trained to fight, and employed him as a guard for the treasure rooms. He also occasionally matched Akim against other slave-owners property, and waged heavily. Akim did well in these bouts, though he had a tendency to maim or kill his opponents. "Such is all a slave deserves: death", he often thought. For as he grew he hatched a plan. By groveling and toadying to his master he gained the favor of being allowed to posess small sums of money, and to wager upon himself. He made sure to fight harder when his own money was on the line in order to encourage such liberties. All the while he was spending his time guarding the treasure rooms learning the secrets of the locks and traps that protected them. He learned the schedule of accounting, and noted when money was taken in and out, and by whom. One day he put his plans into action. He stole a sum of money of money from a strongbox, making sure it was shortly after an accountant known for his taste in expensive whores had done his counting. He made his normal small wager upon himself in an upcoming fight, but had a freed man of his aquantince bet heavily with the stolen gold. He won as usual, and made sure thereafter to lose. He took to smuggling in drink, overeating, and generally being a pain. He was often lashed, but he took it. Eventually he killed a favorite eunuch of the master in a brawl, and he was put up for sale. He arranged for his friend to act as a straw buyer, and had himself purchased. He was thereafter "put to work" in a variety of jobs of his own choosing, though he remained nominally a slave. While working as a bouncer he met Merlinda, and over time came to be quite fond of her. Eventually he "escaped", and they went off to Sicily, judging it to be a fine haven for an escaped Abbasid slave. While there he heard that TrapoII, famed master of locks and traps, was looking for some good men. He joined with pleasure, hoping for a chance to steal from his old master once again one day.
Of course, his chance didn't come quickly. Instead he was killed by a hag in most gruesome and painful fashion on his first mission. Imagine his surprise when he returned to life, face to face with the Fatimid Caliph. He converted to Shia on the spot, and he now feels a debt to the Caliphate that he hopes to repay whenever he can.
