Even for the famously self-involved elves, Jeck was known for his fierce independent streak. His family apprenticed him to a French cook, and, once his master knew him well enough to instruct the elfling and leave him completely alone while he practiced, he grew quite skilled. This proved troublesome on occasion, because his quest for the best and freshest ingredients often led him to other people’s gardens (where “other people†were on more than one occasion witches, ogresses, and, in one horrifying instance, a revenant(?) groundskeeper) where he surely didn’t belong.
His patrons tired of constantly bailing him out of trouble, and although his cooking was excellent, his ego made him too much of a handful. He ran out of hosts willing to accommodate him, and grew tired of the elven lands.
It was around this time that Erhart and Clewin arrived from Wurtemburg, and started poking around the ruins. Pleased to find a new refined palate to try his dishes on, he started accompanying them on their hacks. He was certainly no stranger to peril or exploration, and his abilities complemented theirs nicely. Soon they were fast friends.
The tour of Europe they undertook as they wended their way from the Black Forest to Byzantium gave Jeck plenty of opportunity to experience different regional cuisine, and upon arriving in Constantinople he was overjoyed to find the variety of spices traded there, many of which were completely new to him. He didn’t care one way or the other about Eorl, elf or not – he primarily wanted to spend his time at the Governor’s Mansion Inn, refining the uses of new ingredients and experimenting with the vast resources available across the Bosporous. He understood that there were things Erhart wanted to accomplish, and Jeck was willing to help him out, but there was nowhere he felt more at home than in a kitchen cooking for a receptive public. Quests, monsters, politics, civil war, evil magic, curses and messiah complexes all be damned!
