Eorl grumbles to himself wearily, walking through Chrysopolis on official business. He is stopped by a tiny dandy who introduces himself as Sir Reginald Q. Zappata. Reginald inquires as to the location of a nearby inn, and Eorl tells him there's none finer than The Governor's Mansion Inn, where everyone is treated like an elected official. They B.S. casually, and Eorl begins to pick up that Reginald's backstory doesn't quite hold water. He makes a mental note of it, and then excuses himself to continue handling lieutenant gubernatorial business.

Sir Reginald checks in to a room at Governor's Mansion Inn. Once night falls he tells everyone at the bar that he's going to bed. But he's not going to bed, dear friends. No, for Sir Reginald Q. Zappata is no ordinary fop, he is also, The Crimson Cutlass! Donning his disguise, he leaps out his window and begins prowling the streets looking for street prowlers. He soon finds a particularly vicious looking cutpurse following a pair of drunks away from a local bar. When the cutpurse draws his dirk, ready to mug the drunks, but soon finds the Crimson Cutlass's Cutlass in the small of his back. The Crimson Cutlass growls that he should drop his dirk and run, and tell his fellow Ne'erdowells that the Crimson Cutlass is here to clean up these streets. The mugger runs off and the Cutlass disappears in a flash.

On his way back to the Inn, the Cutlass runs in to Eorl. He leaps from the Darkness and explains that he is a friend of justice. Eorl instantly addresses him as Reginald, assuming rightly that there aren't that many new four foot two, barefoot gentlemen in town. The Crimson Cutlass steadfastly denies it. He gives Eorl a candle with a magnesium treated wick (so as to burn crimson) then runs away. He sneaks back into his room and locks the door, content with a good night's work.

Later that night, Eorl sneaks in to Sir Reginald's room and finds his Crimson uniform stowed beneath his bed. He sneaks them out and brings them down to the laundry service, requesting that they be returned to Sir Reginald's room in the morning.
