The Danger Gang Goes To Lemnos
After taking a break for a day, the Danger Gang sets sail for the island of Lemnos. Thankfully, their sail is uninterrupted by the much forshadowed Barnacle Bashim.
Upon arrival at shore, Martialis asks a local bird if they know anything about caves on either of the two mountains on the island. A bird tells them about a large metal door on nearby Mount Moseklos. The bird leads them there.
That bird told no lie, and there is a fifteen foot tall metal door. They try to yank it open, but this thing won't budge. Luckily, they have a certified Gnome with them, and Karl starts happily trying to dig through the stone outside the door jam. He whistles a jaunty tune, but this is interupted after two hours by the sound of metal feet approaching. Two copper Automatons come tromping out of the woods. The gnag rushes in to fight these galoots while Kotrag puts Hush in a nearby tree. From his safe vantage point, he sees that these guys are a little clumsy, so he asks Karl for a rope. He then trips one of these jerks. It's good, because their hands have grown steaming hot, and it was starting to look like these guys would be bad news. Still, one of them isn't so bad, and they soon take care of them. Karl happily pockets a few of the gears, with plans to tinker up a metal man of his own, but first he has to finish up his tunnel. After a little more digging, he hits metal. It looks like this tunnel is a bust. Marty decides to Detect Magic, see if this door is being held closed magically. Turns out the whole dang mountain detects of Guardian Magic. Zahrah decides she'll try to track where these robots came from; perhaps that shall be there way in. They lead back to a pair of fake trees. Apparently the automatons lied there in wait, charged mechanically by the sea breezes rustling trees like windmills, or some such. Interesting; but not useful. They head to the nearby fishing village.
Villagers there tell them that no one has ever gotten in that old door. It's just a hilarious prank put there by jokesters from long ago. They also think that the story of Hephaestus is actually an ancient perversion of the story of the fall of Satan. No one has any idea how to get in, so they go back to moutian to look around some more.
This time they climb all the way to the top, then down into the dormant mouth of the volcano. Karl gets out the digging tools and starts digging straight down as the rest of the guys set up camp.
