Dark Deedman

Dark Deedman was for years a loyal follower of Mother Night, using her cover to pursue his chosen activities of theft, stealth, and the occasional murder; she never let him down, and, even when he was a low-level thief, the authorities never caught him, a cloud passing over the moon often at the most convenient times. When the party needed a cleric, it was only natural for him to step in and become an official priest of Night. Dark Deedman is fanatically loyal to his goddess, whom he believes desires him (and all her followers) to indulge in the thiefly pursuits of hiding, sneaking, picking pockets, etc. For years (because of the strictures on dual-classed characters) he has been unable to participate in the full range of his thief abilities, and now that he’s finally managed to reach a level where he can employ both his thief and cleric skills without prejudice, he’s anxious to try the thief ones out. In consequence, he may, in combat, be more eager to backstab than cast spells.

Dark Deedman is known for his often strange and morbid sense of humor. If he can kill someone with a Rube Goldberg trap, or in a particularly “ironic” way (the rich man choked to death on his own gold, etc.) he will always go for it. He’s not a bad guy, really, and would be unlikely to betray his friends, or go out of his way to be cruel, but other people, especially jerks, get what’s coming to them: a rapier in the back. And it’s funny!

Dark Deedman is the only surviving member of the group Fearless Earless and Oakenliver recruited so long ago; as such, he’s known Fearless and Oakenliver a long time, and trusts them, although they’re not the kind he would like to hang out with, given his druthers. He likes Emil and KL, even though they’re a pair of goody two shoes, because they can take a joke. He hates Hemlock and wishes she’d never joined the party, but he’s also paranoid about what might happen if she dies: she is, after all, just the puppet of an intelligent sword who can possess people, and what if it chose to possess Dark Deedman? Chance Datsun and Sliver he has not known as long as the rest, but Chance is a good drinking buddy and Sliver is naïve enough that she falls for any number of harmless pranks, which makes her fun to be around. Someday, probably, Dark Deedman will go too far, and Sliver will, wrathful, turn into a dragon and try to eat him. But Mother Night has always protected him hitherto, and he’s sure she’ll get him out of that one as well.

His real name is Alric, and he hates it.
