   Archimedes' tomb was constructed according to the great man's wishes, and following his 
   plans, under the command of M. Claudius Marcellus. Archimedes had requested magnes to 
   be piled in the tomb, but, the difference being ill-understood at the time, magnesia was 
   substituted.  in all other ways the tomb conformed to Archimedes' design, which admittedly 
   he had not had a chance to finalize or test.  M. Tullius Cicero is known to have visited 
   the site, and declaimed thereat an oration that was probably pretty good.
   
   Much more picturesque is the island of Ortygia, where Diana was born...
