As an orphan on the streets of Kiev, Rtishche had every reason to expect a short brutal life. He was fortunate enough to be on the right street corner at the right time to see Gorbunbreaking and entering into a haberdashery just as, unbeknownst to him, the city guard were making their way up the street, summoned by some sharp-eyed citizen. Rtischche’s halloo warned Gorbun of their approach and allowed him to make a getaway, while the night watch beat the boy to a pulp for alerting their quarry.
The next day, Gorbun returned to find the youth still laying there bruised and bloodied. He took Rtischche in, offered him hot kasha, and from that day on the lad served as his lookout. When Gorbun sailed to Chrysopolis, Rtischche went with him.
