The Danger Gang Investigate The Jewish Citadel Of Boothrotum
The Danger Gang soon arrives at the city of Boothrotum. A friendly guide explains that the city was built by fleeing Trojans as a new Troy, but, like a lot of things from that vaunted era, it has fallen into disrepair. Zombres inquires as to the existence of Jewish dungeons, and the man tells him about an ancient pagan temple complex that was recycled by the Jews, they then had to leave when they were attacked by a Lich or something. They decide that this is the area to go check out.
Once at the temple complex, they find only two buildings still standing. One of them has big brass doors; that's the first stop. They have to bust it open, it was barred closed. There are a bunch of rotted out scrolls everywhere. They look mostly like records of births, deaths, marriages, etc., a couple of rabbinical commentaries. They're all rot to hell though, chewed up by squirrels, useless.
Off to the other building. There's a bronze donkey on top. Inside they see a box and some fist sized holes in the floor. They approach the box and some sort of gloop comes oozing out of one of the holes in the ground. It then forms into a big old Clay Golem. Karl and Barry step up to the plate, but their weapons appear to be ineffective. Then he punches Barry in the face so fucking hard. In the meantime, the boys have popped open the box; there's nothing in there. Looks like if once held a Torah, but it's gone now. Everyone immediately backs off, leaving the box. The construct ceases its pursuit. Karl goes back into the democratic headquarters, this time giving the box a wide birth. He finds a trapdoor in the back. He pries it open to find the Golem in there, staring up at him. He gently closes the trapdoor. He asks Zombres if he can try that 10 Feet Away spell. The Golem is soon trying to punch the shit out of the illusion, so Karl sneaks downstairs.
There is nothing there.
He goes back and tells the group what he saw and how he's kind of sick and tired of this place and they should just roll out. Cormac, having heard of Karl's avaricious, gemstone hoarding ways, decides to double check in case of double cross. Down there he finds a crypt of sorts, and there's a bronze snake on top of a pole. He goes back out to find Karl insisting that everyone should leave, this place is dead, he's going back to the boat, etc. He and Kolya head back to the boat and Cormac drops some knowledge bombs on Gershom and Zombres. Who to believe? Probably Cormac, honestly.
Karl turns around half way to the boat and returns to the gang. He explains that, yes, he saw a crypt down there, but, come on. Is it really right to go robbing the corpses of these dead people? Basically he starts acting really out of character. His thief skills are real shitty now, which really doesn't help his attempt to distract the Golem with Zombres so that the others can go back and investigate the crypt. Cormac, Gershom, and Kolya sneak down to the basement and grab the bronze snake before running back out. They all high-tail it back to the boat to figure out their next move.
They rest on the boat, that is, until the natives show up and beg them to spend that Yankee dollar at a local inn. They acquiesce.
