The city of marvels. Large walls have helped defend Thessaloniki from Bulgar invaders. There are several areas of note.

  • The Hilarious Tomb of Stratoniche
  • A ruined hippodrome that has been out of use since the 4th century, ever since Theodosius slaughtered spectators there.
  • The Galarean, a series of municipal bnuildings erected in the Roman era, some still in use.
  • The icon of Panayia Acheiropoietos, made without the use of human hands.
  • The Frieze of St. Leon, one of the finest friezes in Greece.
  • The Church of St. Demetrius.
  • The Monastery of Joseos David.
