The city of marvels. Large walls have helped defend Thessaloniki from Bulgar invaders. There are several areas of note.
- A ruined hippodrome that has been out of use since the 4th century, ever since Theodosius slaughtered spectators there.
- The Galarean, a series of municipal bnuildings erected in the Roman era, some still in use.
- The Statue of Ikero Poretos, which has no hands.
- The Frieze of St. Leon, one of the finest friezes in Greece.
- The Church of St. Demetrius.
- The Monastery of Joseos David.
