Ariston is Sophronia Shinyhands (nee Shrewbelly)'s overprotective older brother. The two were extremely close as children, but as she grew more and more independent, Sophronia began pushing him away and he was relegated to keeping an eye on her from the shadows.

When she married Karl Shinyhands, Jr., Ariston was seized with strange feelings of heartbreak and jealousy, and, taking it upon himself to protect her from her own naivete, he insinuated his way into their new life together. It was not as though he was leaving anything worthwhile behind; the strangely moody gnome had never really got along well with his fellows and was probably not destined for anything more than a government job and an arranged marriage to a dim deb just shy of spinsterhood.

He mostly keeps to himself, however, being physically intimidated by the much stronger [[[Karl Shinyhands, Jr.|Karl, Jr.]] (who has given him a black eye on at least two occasions), and spends his time kind of hanging around awkwardly. For some reason he feels a kinship with Eorl, and he becomes noticeably happier in Chrysopolis.
