Many years ago, Fearless Earless (elven female mage) and Oakenliver (dwarven male fighter), young bucks in search of adventure, were partners in an adventuring party. The party was rather timid, and never did very well, or even got very many xp, so Fearless and Oakenliver left to form their own party, recruiting a bunch of first level characters: a thief Dark Deedman, a ranger Ghlacuoa, and a priest of death Mikshiez. They called themselves the Battling Bastards, because it sounded tough. After only a few adventures, Mikshiez met his goddess after the party stumbled into a kobold ambush, and the party was without a cleric. Now, it happened that the party had developed a friendly rivalry with another group, the Feral Dogs, led by a female fighter named Pedist, and that party had a cleric of Solonor named Bomart (well, a cleric/fighter actually: he was a half elf). Emil of Echelont, a half-elven male bard, In Setta, a dwarven female fighter/thief and Migui Liluimn, an elven female mage, rounded out the membership of the Feral Dogs. The two groups decided to join forces and make a ninesome, but the question obtained who would lead them, Fearless or Pedist? A champion was chosen from each team, and, after a non-lethal combat between Oakenliver and Pedist herself, Oakenliver soundly defeated Pedist and Fearess became leader of the combined group, which kept the name Battling Bastards.

Not long after Migui Liluimn was killed by a mummy, who completely outclassed the party, and, since everyone had mummy rot after their retreat and Bomart was not high enough level to cure it, they went in search of a cleric. They found KL-57, already a little tubby, a priest of the moon who was a little more experienced and had managed to locate a few of the teeth of Dahlver Nar after a particularly perilous quest that had left him the sole survivor of his party. He healed up the party and got them to seek out the teeth he was missing: the more teeth he found, and inserted into his mouth, the fatter he got and the more weird powers he acquired. The party had many fun adventures seeking the teeth, and sundry other treasures, and along the way encountered a ranger who introduced herself as Hemlock, although it would be a long time before the party understood what her true nature. Hemlock and KL shared a common bond, as they were both more or less prisoners of magic items much more powerful than their level, and soon Hemlock had joined the team (despite half-remembered first-edition strictures against having two rangers in a party). Then a jovial half-orc fighter named Stam the Strong who helped save the party from some tough bandits (he had been a member previously) joined, bringing them up to a rather unwieldy eleven characters, at which number they stayed through several levels.

Some time later, however, In Setta, while on watch with her old friend and teammate Bomart, backstabbed him, knocking him unconscious (it was after a tough fight, and no one was at max), and then coup de gracing him in cold blood. She killed Ghlacuoa while he slept and then slipped away with a bunch of the party’s treasure. No one really understood the reason for the betrayal. Adventuring was never again as much fun for the Battling Bastards.

Dark Deedman dual classed into cleric to help fill the void. A somewhat crazed human female evoker named Kuta joined up with them, then, to go fight a black dragon; they got the dragon, but the dragon got Pedist. After that Stam retired from the party; it was just too dangerous, he said, and even a half-orc knew better. Chance Datsun, a human male monk, stumbled drunk into the party while they were angry and itching for a fight, and caused some havoc in the resulting melee before KL managed to call pax. Chance stayed on with the group.

Kuta was living on borrowed time, and the surprise is that she did not get killed casting fireball in a dungeon corridor, but rather was eaten by an aurumvorax (she cast lightning bolt, bad choice). Sliver is the party’s most recent recruit, a silver dragon polymorphed into human form. Chance proposed that, with a dragon in their midst, they might want to change the name of the party to The Brotherhood of Dragons. The name change is still under discussion.
